The
meeting began with introductions and welcoming new members.
Dennis
gave a brief description of the organization’s purpose and goals. There was
discussion about the need to market the organization. This was followed by a
description of each event that the Friends of CVU sponsors.
There
was discussion about the activity calendar (the small calendar that has always
been created and distributed with information about all of the various school
activities). There was no fall calendar this year because no one volunteered to
be the coordinator for that committee. Community members have noticed the
absence of this calendar and have expressed disappointment that it is not
available this year. The person who does this needs to get the information from
Kevin Reill to the printer and make contacts to local businesses who make donations
to cover the cost. Mary P will create a temporary tri-fold calendar for this
fall and Dennis will pursue trying to get someone to do the calendar for the
remainder of the year.
Wendy
Saville gave us an update on the preparations for Freshman Parent Night.
Everything is ready to go for Sept 10. Parents of Freshmen were encouraged to
attend.
Mary
Crane gave an update on preparations for Spirit Day which is Sept 20. There
will not be a girl’s soccer game on that day this year. We discussed the possibility
of having a volleyball game instead. Maureen has a volleyball net and ball
which she will bring.
Mary
P has agreed to be the buyer for the concession stand this fall. The stand
could not be opened last weekend because of a bee problem but hopefully it can
be opened for the next game. We reviewed the Friends of CVU role in the
concession stand – we organize the buying of items to sell and we manage the
money that is generated from the sales. We talked about having the concession
stand be open for other sports besides soccer and basketball. All that is
really needed to make that happen is for someone to take an interest in
organizing it.
Mary
Crane mentioned that someone had called her about alumni shirts.
We
don’t know if anyone is going to do a student directory this year. Mary P will
contact Linda Parent and ask her if she is planning to do it.
We
talked about the role of the Town Reps. Traditionally there have been 3-4 town
reps for each town and they have attended meetings and made phone calls for
special events. We talked about the goal of having at least one rep from each
town to attend each meeting. Last year there were many meetings when no rep was
present from several of the towns. It was felt that we may not have made the
roles clear to people who agreed to be town reps. There were several people at
the meeting who volunteered to be Town Reps for this year and we will continue
to recruit more people for this important role. The people who were there
agreed to make sure that at least one rep per town attends each meeting.
Barb
Johnson as membership chair indicated the need to have one Town Rep be a
contact person for receiving the membership forms as they are sent in. These
people agreed to be responsible for receiving the membership forms:
Charlotte
– Jane Michaud
Hinesburg
– Mary Pellegrino
Williston
– Amy Nolan
Shelburne
– Janine Gunther
We
discussed the need to include articles about the Friends in the monthly school
newsletters. It would be good publicity for the Chair of each committee to
submit articles both before and after their event.
