To: All prospective CVU Field
Hockey Players
From: Kate McDonald, Varsity
Coach
Greetings, Ladies!
I hope that you’re enjoying
your summer. It’s the
most wonderful time of the year, ladies – enjoy!
Tryouts
for all players will begin on Monday, August 11 and will run from
As returning players know, preseason
in rigorous; it is our expectation that you will arrive on August 11 in shape
with your skills refreshed. This will
provide your coaches with a more accurate picture of your condition and
ability. We are expecting that our
numbers will cause us to have to make cuts again this year at the JV and
Varsity levels. Selection to the Varsity
and JV teams is based upon experience, skill level, conditioning level,
attitude, effort and attendance. I’ve
enclosed a copy of our evaluation rubric for you to reflect upon your status
going into tryouts and throughout the season.
A FEW REMINDERS:
-
All freshmen
players need a physical prior to
-
Physicals are
valid for two years. Returning players
whose physicals have exceeded that time need an updated physical.
-
All players must
complete ten days of practice before competing in regular season games
-
GO TO FIELD HOCKEY CAMP! Having worked
at both the UVM and St. Mike’s camps, I can’t emphasize enough how much camp
helps players improve and evolve. I
strongly believe that our collective improvement over the years is due in large
part to off-season play (summer camps, indoor leagues), and it is a clear
indication of your level of commitment to your team and your sport. Go to the UVM and SMC websites for more
information about local camps. www.uvm.edu; www.smcvt.edu
-
Please keep
in mind that attendance at tryouts impacts your placement on a team. We will
evaluate your performance based upon the days that you attend
preseason, and make team selections accordingly. See enclosed evaluation rubric to become
familiar with our evaluation procedure.

BEGIN

Hydrate and stretch. Take charge of your nutrition and commit to
eating healthy, well-balanced meals (whole grains, fruits & veggies,
protein, avoid sugars). Be vigilant
about this – it will truly help you during preseason, the regular season, and
throughout your life.
-
Cross-train to
remain motivated and to challenge your body in different ways. Go hiking, biking, swimming, practice yoga,
play Frisbee – anything to get your heart rate up and work your muscles will
benefit you on days you’re not running (2 days/week).
-
Think about your
individual goals for the summer as well as the regular season. It is important that you arrive on the field
in August prepared both physically and mentally for the challenges that are in
store. You should be prepared to run a
