In the daily journal of Albert Hunter on Thursday, May 26 his friend Chet brings Albert his glasses which he had lost when a bull had cornered them. He also brought Jimmy-John’s “talking machine”. At this point in the journal I thought it would be interesting to research the talking machine because this was the very first type of record player. Not a lot of people would know what a talking machine is, and they may find this website interesting. The Victor Talking Machine was a big hit in the 1900’s, and demand grew quickly for this small, well-built contraption. Many people believed its name came from the wife of the machinist who helped build it (Victoria), but Eldridge Johnson thought the name just sound nice. The photo below shows Geraldine Farrar listening to herself on The Victor Talking Machine.
