October 1899

Thursday  October 5, 1899

8 PM  Warm and pleasant, took grandpa and a load of previsions to the lighthouse against a west wind this morning.  Got back here at 12:30.  Had everything to do and just got done, ready to go to bed.

 

 Friday October 6th

A fine day.  Raining in mmg.  Cap went to city on team with Pete Bessett.  Chet didn’t work a.m. but went to P.O + to see Burt Hines.  He went to Grand Isle late in P.M.

I sent letter to 1st assistant P.O master general regarding chilblains compound being mailable matter. 

Lake still as a pan of milk about 4+5 p.m.

 

Saturday, Oct. 7, 9 p.m.

Cap + Chet went to L.H to-night in the scoop with a bushel of grapes + other stuff.  New moon + no wind.  After butter + took dinner at Uncle Rebus.  Aunt Mary made me a present.  Sent letter to H.S.D.

 

 Sunday Oct. 8, 9 p.m.

Laid abed till 6. a.m. for the first time in a long while.  Six horses in barn.

Did all chores all day alone + got supper for all hands but no one came.

Have just finished barn, chores + going to bed.  Cass here to dinner with me + I helped him dig 2 bu potatoes + he gave me 10 cents.

Warm + pleasant all day.

Frost last night.

 

Monday Oct. 9, 1889

A little rain.

Chet came home to-night but Cap’n didn’t.

Understand that more men and horses are coming for me to look out for.

I think I shall get out one of these days.

 

Tuesday Oct 10

  Warm + pleasant. 

Charlie Smith came to-night. 

Grandpa came from L.H. + went away.

Dug some of Mt. Delaware.

One hill 8 potatoes, all about same size weighed 4 ¼ lbs.

 

 Friday Oct. 13

Went to Uncle Reube's after Butter.  Crawford paid $1.30 for bread and milk.  He made me an offer that gained him a friend in need and I hope I will never forget it.

Changes, Changes, Changes

        

 Tuesday Oct 31, 1899

Cloudy, light S. wind.

Arrived at 10:20 a.m. with Bertha.  Chet was down cellar + didn’t know we were coming till we hailed.

B + I had a great time getting oarlocks, oars and a boat.

Expect to be here until 1900.

Went to city last night, stayed at Hines. Mrs. Smalley lent me books.

Stayed at Uncle Reubes Saturday night.

Just about sick for two weeks.

Almost sick abed now.
