ashore at noon. Chestie had his hair cut yesterday, I believe, + looks fine.

Sept. 6
Fine
day, warming up. P.M. Pulled beans in
garden + put pods in bag today. Cleaned hedge + bush along road on farm side +
worked in orchard most of day. Chestie + Lloyd out with me great part of the
day.
Frank
Gilmour + Henry Bessette put beans in barn and
commenced thrashing them.
Fred
Farmer has bought a building lot next to Goodspeed, +
expects to build on it right away.

Sept. 7. 9 P.M.
Cloudy
day, warm, until towards night then cooler + rain. Very fresh breeze N.
tonight. Frank finished thrashing + farmed his beans, 8 bu. I finished trimming the old orchard + cleaned
out the wood + brush. It makes a great improvement. Frank Akey’s
sister came for him, but was not welcome. I feel sorry for the poor old woman.
Fred Farmer drew two or three loads of lumber for his new house, and got a
bottle of Sodium Phosphate (Rexall) at Sullivan’s for
me.

Sept. 8
Warm
+ sunny. Fine day. All went to Colchester + I came back alone. Got some
tomatoes at Parker’s for seed. Got a big fruit jar 95 cents + 2 lbs sulfur 10.
Good dinner + a good time. Carey finished threshing oats.

Sept. 9, 1906 8:20 p.m.
Very
hot all day, Since sunset a big thunder storm has been gathering in all
directions and now it has burst upon us.
I could hear the wind 10 minutes coming across the lake and I am glad
now that I didn’t go to W. Pt. as I had a mind to at 6 O’ clock.
Have
been getting about 3 pks of tomatoes ready to put in
bottles or cans. Shall have to put them
in to-morrow.
Frank
got 1 qt milk. didn’t pay.

Fine
day. N wind. Did chores, went to Station.
Sweet
corn to Hardy’s, 10c paid. Louis King
gave me 3 melons. Gave 2 to Chet and
kept 1.
Got
my picture of Schlatter. The best thing I have had for years. Am very much pleased with it. Came home via the shore. Henry Cole came over to Chet’s this evening +
came home with me to stay tonight.
Tuesday
Sept 11
Quite
warm. Very little wind. Fair So. breeze this evening.
Put
up 4 pots of cooked ripe tomatoes, 28 lager bottles and 3 qts. I expected folks but they came not. Henry is digging potatoes, 50 bu.
yesterday. Gave me some to bake for
dinner. They were very nice.

Came ashore about 10:20 A.M.
Pulled onions, about half the bed. Am feeling much better than when I went over.
Chet came over with a crow and bluejay to set
up. I drew home 6 boards, a bag of
manure and a little flood wood.
Farmer put up his new house when I was away.Henry Bessette has moved to
White’s for the winter and, Jim Sumner

Came home around by lake shore and
stopped at Coles
Tue, Sept 25
Quite cool, So. wind light, clear.
Finished digging the onions and put them
in the barn.
Mowed and raked part of the buckwheat.
Gathered all the pumpkins, squashes,
melons, cucumbers, gourds and tomatoes and stored them except the melons, did
the chores and was ready for supper at 7.30.
Chestie helped me all day and worked hard and was pretty tired
tonight. He went to sleep in his chair
eating supper. Mice have got in here
somehow, for I hear them.
Wed. Sept. 26
Wind So. Fresh now and all day. Clear and cool.
Finished mowing buckwheat. Henry Cole helped rake and crack it.
Gave him Summer squashes and watermelons. Helped carry the down. Peter has held up and pulled from wagon
coming from city. Gathered my winter
squashes and cut my sweet corn stalks and cobs that Gilmore’s hens left.
Thursday, Sept. 27, 1906
Wind
S. & westerly. Mod. Cool. Light rain
in early mng. Built foundation & floor for
corn-crib; put the melons in the barn. & spread out the onions & dry
about 1 ½ bu. of gold coin potatoes out of the sidewalk. Over to Henry’s this
evening. Watermelon. Good visit with them all.

Sept. 28
Fine
day. Light variable winds & calm, warm P.M. cool mng.
& quite cool evening. Circle around both S. and Mn.
Hardest storm in 100 yrs. on Florida coast yesterday. Weather Bureau just
warning of approach of storm from both S. & W.
Went
to Station. Mng. Went to Benlaw
also. Brought cucumbers from Island. Books from Camp Merrihew;
box of manure from Stone’s stable & got home about 2 P.M. dug about 1
½ bu. G.C. potatoes. Ruth & her mother making lots of pickles.
Mrs. Farmer got new mail-box & going to have new washing machine.
Am
wondering how I am going to build a corn-crib.

Built
fence, barn to fodder corn patch. Went over to Henry’s with Chestie &
Lloyd. got wire stretcher. Run in over 20 stacks sweet corn in rain from 3:30
P.M. to 5:20. Big wind & rain from S.
Sun.
Sept. 30
Rain
& wind all night. Slept on Chet’s kitchen floor, wind shifted in night to
N.W. Big gale all day. Dinner at Cole’s. Mr. Carey down to Chet’s, with Jim
& Ray & Albro. They took Chestie home with
them, and it seemed awful lonesome when I went over to do the chores & he
was not then to greet me. I hope he will not be gone long. The wind still
blows. (9 P.M.) but not as hard quite. Stopped
at Farmer’s coming home. They expect now to move into their new home to-morrow.
