Monday, October  1- 1906      At Station

 

Went to station.

 

 

Tue Oct 2    At Station

 

 

Wed. Oct 3      At Station

 

Came ashore a little after noon. Chet + I took dinner at station.  Very fine day.

 

 

Thurs. Oct 4

 

Went to city.  Henry Cole went with me.  Carried back some wheels for Chet but couldn’t leave them.

Got home about 1:20 P.M + helped Henry Cole put 3 loads of buckwheat into his barn.

Very fine comfortable day.

 

Chet’s birthday. Made him a present of a bushel, and half bushel basket, $1.70.

 

 

Fri Oct 5

 

Fair + warm. Henry Cole helped me build a corn scaffold out of the last installment of my lumber + husked a little sweet corn. He left at 3:20 + I put 8 stocks of corn into the barn.

 

 

Sat. Oct 6

 

Rainy day. Husked 2 bu. sweet corn and then broke off ears to be husked later. Rain prevented carrying fodder from shed & barn + packing it.

Had almost a hurricane last night with heavy rain so I slept at Chet’s.

 

 

Sun Oct 7

 

N.W. Gale, very cold all day + evening. Went to W. Pt. Signaled all well + to go again Thursday.  Chet O.K.

 

Henry Cole shot big hawk yesterday.

 

Albro came P.M to see if Mrs. Cary was sick.

 

 

Mon Oct 8.

 

Had So. wind all day. Frost last night. Wind still fresh.

 

Dave Clark shot a fine hawk for me this morning.  Went after Henry Cole, but he got there a minute too late, Henry took his hawk to Conger today, sent a letter to Chestie of Albro.

 

Transferred corn fodder from shed to the bag and put in a lot more in the barn. (Coal delivered to Station)

Quite a cold windy day, turned buckwheat over.

 

Tues, Oct 9.

Fair A.M. Rain P.M. Showers Thunder and Lightning and a hell of a South gale until about 3:20 P.M. which wind suddenly shifted to West or N.W. Gale. Which followed heavy rain and about sunset completely calm, but breezy again at 8 P.M.

Frank drew all field corn, and I piled it under the shed.  Cleaned barn for buckwheat after dinner I got little in, wind blowing 90 miles an hour. Heavy shower stopped us as we went down and helped Henry Cole draw wood and clean up. Very dark coming home. Lost the road several times.

 

Wed. Oct 10.          Went to Station + returned

Went to Station. Got back at noon.

Pretty cool day, with a few light showers.

Mrs. Carey had an old fashioned dinner and I ate almost enough to kill me. I guess it was very nice.

Worked on sweet corn all P.M.

Carried the hawk to Chet who was mighty pleased with it.

 

Thu. Oct 11

Rain morning + A.M. + evening. Husked sweet corn + dug a quarter of my potatoes. 1 ¼ bu. Built fence and bars to separate the cows and horse so horse won’t run the cow around. Built a preventer over the cow this morning but it wasn’t a success. Fixed another this P.M. shall know in the morning if it was a success or not. If it is, it is worth a farm.

7:15 P.M. Just home as it commenced raining. Cold and damp + rain all day.

 

Fri Oct 12

 

Quite cool, Adirondacks (some of them) covered with snow. Light squalls here, P.M.  Sick since 1:20 AM., colic, but finished digging my potatoes, 6 Bu. Got in sweet corn. Horse ran away. No damage. Ruth helped get corn. Not feeling at all well tonight.

 

 

Sat Oct 13

 

Quite cool but not bad. Husked corn. Ruth helped in A.M. Letter from Col. Chestie wants to come home. Ruth + Mother went to Col. Left me alone, H. Cole went to cider mill.

 

 

Sun Oct 14

 

Warmer. Fine day. Came home at 11 A.M.  H.Cole here until 3 P.M., Folks came with Chestie. He has bad cold. Stayed at Chet’s last night. H.C. staying with me tonight.

 

 

Mon Oct 15

 

Warm as summer, + fair + very light wind. Finished drawing corn, + dug 2 rows of Chet’s Gold Coins.  Good visit with Chestie after supper. Frank finished husking field corn: 2 bushels. At Henry’s this eve. Got 1 lb. Butter for Chet. Paid 25 Cents. Prof Hicks says storm coming, 16 to 19, so think will go to station + not wait for Wed or Thurs, as I had planned.

Getting ready to go to station, At station.

                                   

Serious time with back and side.

 

 

At station until Fri Oct 26.  Came Ashore at 2 P. Henry Cole with me this evening.

 

 

Sat. Oct 27

 

Cleared out the wagon shed and store room.

 

Threatening rain all day. Good visit with Chestie this evening till his bed time.

 

Blanchard + 2 friends from Montpelier here and Ed Liberty: Farmer, Pete Bessette + Phil Buskin having a good time as I came along. Carried letter to Henry that I had written to him while I was at the station.

 

Sunday, Oct 28, 1906

Cool squally on Mt. all around, quite cool. Blanchard and his gang went away today.

Did up chores at Chet’s this morning, and put my potatoes down cellar here today. Frank milked tonight + will this week while I clean up around here.

Dinner at Aunt  Em’s. Clara showed me the pigs they are nice ones. Forgot my coat + went over again this evening after it. Carried razor head down to Peter Cole’s. Snowing or raining just a little at this writing 9 P.M..

Mon. Oct. 29, First Snow

Working at Home. Quite Cool. Half an inch of snow this morning. Lots of chores. 7.45 Mrs. Companion had trouble with payments on stove, and asked me to help her straighten them out for her. Took me until noon.  Got dinner + came around by lake shore. Helped Henry pick over a few beans. Went over + took supper with Henry there. Aunt Em gave me 2 cabbages and carrots+ beats + lent me a kettle and tomorrow, I shall try and cook something to eat.


Tue Oct 30    Went to station.

Quite comfortable, went to station. Got there little before 9. Wind N.W. easy, but good breeze when I came away and I came near being swamped on the rocks on N.W. side, by having my sail up before I got away from there. Chet had three grebes set up since last Friday and they were about perfect. One of them was quite so, I think. Working at home today. Henry Cole with me this evening.


Wed Oct  31

Working at home, regulating things for winter. Henry came up + took supper with me.
