Wed Nov 1   At Station

Thurs. “    2         ““

Fri.          3       ““

Sat. Nov. 4

Came ashore at 3 P.M.  Came from Pt. with Chet’s team.  Did chores, ate supper. Had good time with Chestie, called at Frank’s. Sung “Raking Hay”, Moody + Miss Levanaway there.

Called at Farmer’s, and at last after 14 days absence I find myself at home once more. And now I have got to hustle.

Ruth gave me a loaf of bread, I find that Chet has cut my sage and there is nearly a dishpan full of it. I am very glad he did it for it would have been very hard for my back if I had done it.

It is much warmer to-night; and I hope I may be able to finish painting this house tomorrow.

Sun. Nov. 5  At Home.

Some sun but more clouds. Warmer- a little and threatening storm.

Did chores at Chet’s, at breakfast. Stopped at Farmer’s + stayed to dinner. (Boiled diner + a good one). Had a good visit.

Came home + puttied glass in on half a window sash.

Henry Thayer, called half an hour, + had good visit with him too.

At 4:30 went over + did up chores ate supper and had another good visit with Ruth, Ray + Miss Johnson, discussing theology, and now at 10.P.M find myself at home once more.

Killed one mouse and there are more to be looked after I see.

Mon. Nov. 6  At Home.

Snow + rain all day. Did chores at Chet’s mng + evng, took brkfst + spr. there and dinner at Henry’s when I went after milk.  Did very little at home, too stormy to paint or draw sash.

Am mad as hell clear through to find that Chet was soaked on his horse as he has been on everything else that he has bought. I am told she will kick like the devil by spells, and that one has to keep an eye on her all the time, or his life is in danger,

Tue. Nov. 7  At Home. 10 P.M.

A fairly comfortable day considering. A little sun and more clouds, and more of the day warm.

Chores mng +evng as usual, and making with Chestie this evening. Finished with light paint all but front door panels. A little more trimming to do, caught 3 mice. Stopped at Fred’s on way home.   Am to treat his boy for a while with magnetized paper, as an experiment. Hope I may succeed.

Wed. Nov. 8    10 P.M.

Rainy after 11. A.M. Cold, Chores as usual. Came home with team at 10 A.M., got ready to go to City. One-armed Pedlar from Winooski came + I bought 3 prs Stockings, one shirt and one pr drawer, $1.50.  Commenced raining as I went back to Chet’s with team. Sawed wood, raked yard, pumped water + ate supper. Told stories to Chestie, + came home stopping about an hour at  Farmer’s. Mr. + Mrs. DeGery and another lady were there.

Good Moon. Starlight; few clouds. Think it will be fair tomorrow for a trip to the City.

Thu. Nov. 9  At Home, 11.15 P.M

Cold. Cloudy + windy, all day. Chores as usual. Went to the City. (Oats $1.35. Cracked Corn $1.00 Soap 15 cents for Chet.) Spent $4.57. Got home late. Took dinner with Vina.

He was at lower farm + he + Barrows were drunk as two d----d fools. He gave me some cabbage, Celery, Beets, parsnips and turnips.

Chestie was happy when I gave him a story book + banana and box of domino’s. Poor little fellow, he didn’t look as if he felt very well to-night.

Fri Nov. 10  At Home. 9.30 P.M.

Quite cold day. Snow on Mts all around. Chores as usual. Went to W. Pt. + signaled Chet. He is well. Told him we were + that I would try + be there next Wed. He + hired boy at Island tried to pull in Stone’s Dock, but couldn’t move it.

Flock of 30 wild geese went S. Another flock at 7 P.M. I heard but couldn’t see when near Frank Gilmore’s coming home.

Stopped at Gilmore’s an hour or so. Frank Akey + Moody + Miss Levanaway were there.

Ray + Chestie rode over here with me and my vegetables. He is having lots of comfort with the dominoes I gave him. Temperature outside now 28 degrees.

10:30 P.M Snowing lightly.

Sat. Nov. 11  At Home. 11 PM

Warmer, a little. But cldy and threatening, cldy to-night.

Painted trimmings on houses, would have finished only I thought it would rain, so I quit + dug turnips, carrots + beets + got them under cover. Have just finished cutting tops off carrots + beets are very small + not very good I guess. Turnips are also small.

Chores as usual. Aunt Em gave me a lb of butter. Henry called on me a little while. He sold his cider apples to Francis so I guess I shant have any cider this year. After supper Chestie wanted me to tell more more stories about the squirrels, so of course I had to do it + get home late. He is a dear little fellow and about all I have in the world to love.

Sun. Nov. 12  10:30 PM

Warm and comfortable, S wind, cloudy mostly, but a little sun.

Chores are usual, cleaned Chet’s wood yard, put all wood in shed, and burned rubbish. Moody had wagon, + women got Jerry’s + went to Colchester. Ruth and boys stayed and Ray came home. Forgot to take blanket off the horse so went back from the field to take it off + water horse. Cleaned out museum + bedroom. Uncle Ruebe helped fill husk mattress and bring it in. Hope I may rest well on my new bed to-night. Got milk can at P. Cole’s + sent it to Henry’s for milk to go to Station next Wed. Packed Beets Carrots parsnips + turnips in sand. (first real touch of winter)

Mon. Nov. 13  At Home. 10 PM

Rain + Snow and a powerful N. Gale all day. Chores as usual, worked inside getting ready to leave. Went over to Henry’s to dinner and to visit a little while, lonesome without Chestie and the Baby.

Tue. Nov 14  Mid. At Station

Went to Station. Arrived here at sunset.  Hustled all day.

Lake calm all A.M. but of course I was not quite ready to start until wind came up. I got here however with a lot of things, but I shant cross the water again this year in such a wind, unless I am obliged to.

Took a Brattleboro paper from mail box which informed me that my old and very dear friend B. S. Perry passed away. On Friday the 10th Inst. I had been expecting it and had been feeling quite anxious at not receiving an expected letter from him as I certainly should have done if he had been able to write. It broke me all up.

The wind seems to be rising slowly.

Wed. Nov 15   9. P.M        At Station

Wind S. all day and a big gale, blowing hardest from 1. P.M until 9 P.M. Where it eased up and gradually dropped to very fresh at midnight.

The Nelson W. Fisk, a two master, went N. at 8.45 A.M with mainsail dragging in the water. Boat rocking and pitching fearfully. Headed in direction of Plattsburg apparently.

Writing to Henry’s folks this evening.

Have just read of Bert Perry’s demise in Brattleboro paper sent I guess by his sister Lydia. I was expecting to hear bad news, but can’t say why only I had not heard from him as expected. I always regarded him as one of my best and truest friends.

9:30           Very Fresh. Sun has come out once more. Very pleasant.

10:00         Some one coming across No Beach towards W. Pt.

4:30 PM  N.W. lighten since 3 P.M. but now seems to be rising again.

This has been a fairly pleasant and quite comfortable day. Snow that covered nearly into Monday, has almost entirely gone. Fire in Sitting room went out of noon and I have not rekindled it though it is all ready to light whenever. I think I need it. No boats have passed,    I have looked toward the Point, many times through I did not expect to see that, or any one else. Haven’t done much, Not feeling well, Ate only one meal to-day.

10:30   Wind N.W. light. Very dark, No lights to be seen anywhere.

11:20                                           A light Snow Squall,

Sat, Nov, 18    At Station

7:02    AM Sunrise Wind N.W. Fresh + Rising.

Sky + clouds present a peculiar, unusual and beautiful appearance.  Sky beautifully tinted all around, and the few clouds surround the horizon looking like huge feathers and big bunches of wool.

Noon     Wind N.W. mod has been dropping on the last hour or two that looks now as if it might rise again soon. For a little while at least Sunshine all A.M. + quite comfortable outside in sun. Very few clouds, Snows again, covers high mtn ranges though there seems to be very little on those near the lake.

11:45      Wind N.W. mod, cloudy,

Baked beans, Minded clothes + did other necessary things. This evening writing to Henrys folks, and making out orders for subscriptions to Woman’s Farm Journal and Spare Moments.

Wind seems to the rising I think.

Sun, Nov. 19    At Station.

Wind N. mod, Sun rose behind cloud but has since been shining pleasantly. The rip-rap were iced over this mng for first time and this is also first time that I have noticed steam rising. I           guess winter will be here soon and I dread it more and more as the years go by.

Noon. Wind N. mod. Clear and sunny.  A fine day, so far.

1.00      N Easterly light + easy.  Fine.  Someone at the point.

1.10       Two duck hunters going from W. Pt to R.R.

11.00 P.M.Wind northerly.  Light + steady all day.  Fair + dry.

Put out thermometer this mng.  About 27˚ all day.

Made Rice Pudding.  Good.

Tue.  Nov. 21   At Station.

7.02 A.M. Sunrise.  Wind very light, Northerly.

“Clear” as Pete Jones, in “the Green Mountain Boys” would say- “as a hounds tooth in a frosty morning.”

Not the least, vestige of a cloud to be seen anywhere.  The sky-line perfectly + clearly defined all around.

As pleasant as a morning in May.  Only the thermometer registers 31˚.  Bread sponge all ready to attend to and then I must take my morning walk.

I started in yesterday mng to walk a mile before breakfast, and I have to walk around the house just 50 times to make the mile.  I deposit a bean in a cup every time round to mark any progress, and indicate the completion of my mile.

A big hawk was sailing around here when I took down the lamp.  I came down + took the glass + watched him.  He disappeared in the direction of Trembleau.

9.30     Wind E. very light.  Not a cloud yet.

10.00    I wish some one would call just for a little while.  Started on my walk at 9.10 + finished at 9.35.  Fifty times round in 26 minutes, It takes me just 56 steps at each round as I find that I take 2800 steps in walking a mile.

I think that 25 minutes is about as good time as I can average, in all kinds of weather.

12 P.M. Have my bread ready for tins nearly, and now for hash for breakfast, the exercise and fresh air make me hungry.

9.00     Winds S. Light, I think now that we will have more wind.  Never saw the water as clear as to-day.

This has been a most beautiful day in every respect.

Wed. Nov. 22      At Station,

Haven’t felt very well today and haven’t tried to do anything except take my morning walk and a pain in my chest persuaded me to give that up at the third quarter.  Damn the pen that blots everything.
