Thurs. June 14

 

Returned to shore at 3 PM

 

Chet gave me $5.00.

 

At Henry’s this evening.  He and Bert were out on the reef fishing, got about 5 dozen perch.

 

 

Fri. June 15

 

Hot as hell.  Did chores.  Come home and brot coat, bottles etc.

 

Saw P. Cole plowing.  One mng this week he go 60 pike before her got home to breakfast at 7 AM.  Two half days gave him $12.70.  Found ˝ Pt of old Medford yesterday when I came home.  Got Henry’s harrow and came back here.  Sprouted a bu. of potatoes.  Took half a bu. of them together with my garden seeds and went to Chet’s.  Assorted a lot of onion sets at dinner and then harrowed garden patch, about a quarter acre.  Carried harrow home, gave Henry half bu. of G.C. Potatoes and Clara some bush beans.  Aunt Em gave me about 3 qts of peas and Henry gave me a good drink of cider.

 

Did chores and split wood till nearly dark, ate supper and came home tired as a dog.\

 

It is not 9.20 and I am going to turn in.

 

 

Sat. June 16

 

Cloudy, threatening rain all day and quite comfortable.

 

In my garden planted 4 rows G. C. potatoes, 1 row of onion sets and three rows peas-  Telephone and Yorkshire Hero.

 

Ruth led horse to furrow out.  Frank had mare and new cultivator PM for berries, etc.

 

Chestie helped set out onions and did it well.

 

 

Sun. June 17

 

Wet and raining, but not a heavy fall.  Went to Station.

 

Louis King went also.  Called on Hi at Island and got dinner.  Hi brought us to W. Pt. in his new launch.

 

Harvey + friend, Mr. Comstock were at Island. Stone + friends at Pt. They gave me a bottle of beer.

 

Met Martin + Richard Cross on the water going to Station. After we parted for home.  They had Hira’s boat + Chet’s oars. About 6 PM they passed Chet’s homeward bound with a lot of perch I packed in a bag.

 

Louis said he had a fine time + wants to go again. The mare was scared at a bundle of fence wire and came near crashing things. I was glad the women + children were not driving. One hold back snap broken was all the damage done however. 

 

Stopped and visited Frank  + wife coming home.  Not raining much the evening.

 

A red squirrel came to Chet at the Station Thursday after I came away, + is still there. Though we did not see it while there.

 

                                   

Mon. June 18

 

Fine day. Cloudy + comfortable. AM.  Hot as Hell PM.

 

Planted nearly 100 hills Burpees Golden Bantam sweet corn that Hira gave me. Planted a row of brush beans: covered three rows of peas + phosphate  everything.

 

Chestie helped me more than ever.

 

Awful tired to-night.  Intend going to W. Pt. in mng.

 

 

Tue. June 19

 

The hottest yet I think. Went to Station + worked for Stone 4 hrs. Made near walk at head of stairs.

 

After coming from Station shot a young black woodchuck, robin and swallow,+ signaled Chet to come after them.   Frank Berger + Fred Cross came down + put dock out, but they didn’t do it.

 

Marie called at Chet’s after supper and brought me home. Had hair clipped.

 

 

Wed. June 20

 

Hot as hell again. Went to Pt. made platform foot of stairs. Chet came over. Porter didn’t come down to make dock. Got cuc. water m. and musk m. seeds of Aunt E. this evening.

 

 

Thu June 21, 1906

 

Hot as hell again. Threatening rain all day. Sun set red as blood and larger than I ever saw it before.

 

Put a load of manure in 100 hills for tomatoes + 44 for all vines. Covered it + took wagon wheel to M. Cross to have tire set all before noon. Cultivated some corn and had corn + potatoes PM. Awful tired to- night. I hear that Orson Berger is in for 10 days for being drunk, glad of it. Paid pedlar 20 cents I have owed for about a year.

 

 

Fri. June 22                      Went to station

 

Rain steadily all night I think. Made me a little late this mng. Henry Thayer + I went to Shaeffers for cabbage plants. Got some but they were not very good. Saw Henry Cole a few minutes.  Henry T. gave me about 50 good tomato plants + Chestie helped sat them and planted 44 hill of vines, cucs, melons, squash etc. 

 

We all came over to pick strawberries but a big shower seeming imminent, we hurried home with about with about 8 qts, and didn’t get half of them.

Read letter + pictures from “Lillian”, now Mrs. Wm. A. Slade.

 

Expect to get to W.P. early tomorrow mng with Henry Bessette, put out Stone’s dock + clean up things, + then go to station for Chet to come ashore and go visiting Sunday.

 

Went to station at 2 P.M.

 

 

Thu June 28     Hot as hell.

                                     

Came ashore this P.M. Chet came to Station about noon. Found that my strawberry bed had raided by some of these d-d bitches around here.

           

Boys both have cold + are not feeling well.

 

 

Fri June 29    Hot as hell again.

                      

Rain last night + this mng. let up about 5 A.M. Both boys sick last night and have been so all day. Sending by Farmer in mng for medicine to Dr. Forbes.  215 Pearl Street.

 

I dug holes + set 14 posts for wire fence around the fodder corn. Ruth + I came over + picked 16 qts strawberries and Farmer will sell them for me to-morrow.

 

Borrowed Henry’s fence-wire stretcher.

 

 

Sat June 30

 

Rainy all A.M. + cool. Took down a lot of barbed wire fence + finished fence around fodder corn.

 

Albro came while we ate dinner. Ruth cleaned the cellar. I drew old muck + buried it in the desert + Got lumber wagon wheel at M. Cross.

           

Farmer gave me $2.08 for ˝ bu strawberries and I am going to let him pick + market the rest for me.
