Sun. July 1

 

Went to station at 2 P.M.

 

Came from Chet’s around by lake + stopped at Cole’s an hour or two then came home + swept up + went to Station.

 

 

Thurs. July 5

 

Returned to shore at 10 A.M.

 

Bordeaux mixture on potatoes P.M. Henry’s this Eve returned wire stretcher. + got tomato plant.

 

Rec’d letter from Mary.

           

Ed died sometime recently I guess, don’t know when.

 

 

Fri July. 6.

 

Hot again. Hoed the strawberry corn patch; hand job. Pete Bessette had horse to cultivate his, beans, 2 hrs and a half. Half an hour out of it to cultivate my garden.

 

I hoed some in my garden + built one side of a pig pen.

 

Two easy shots at whippoorwill this evening coming home, but of course had no gun. Watkins wants Chet to land him at Benlaw at 1 P.M. to-morrow.

 

 

Sat. July 7, 1906

 

Hot day.  Martin Cross mowed the barn lot: plowed, sowed + harrowed for buckwheat.  I hoed my peas, sweet corn + one row of potatoes in my garden, and raked the barn lot half over by hand, and finally left the whole business flat.  Came home via lake shore. 

 

Feel very tired; and think sometimes that I will give up the whole business of Light-House-Farming.

           

Fred Cross and Porter had a scrap at the Hotel.

 

 

Sun. July 8

 

Very hot, and a very loud thunder shower this evening.  Folks all went to Col; got home just ahead of first shower.  Dinner at Henry’s.  Best strawberry cake I ever ate.  Henry to commence haying to-morrow.

 

 

Mon. July 9

 

Damp + lowery all day, though sun came out a little in middle of day.  Did more work on pig pen, and went to Station.  All well there.  Watkins did not take out boat to transfer his family and baggage to the Island.  Chet captured another boat running wild the 5th shortly after I left for home. 

 

Letter from Gil. In Bloomeburg, Pa.  He says Ed died in the latter part of May.

 

Mr. Barrows’ daughter + husband are camping in the Tucker Cottage for a while.

           

Chet wants to come ashore Sat. night.

 

 

Tue. July 10                 9.20 PM.

 

Just home from City. Mrs. Gilmore + I.

           

Lowery A.M.  Rain P.M.  Dinner at Hiram’s, Vina alone. Hi + the girls came later.  Got cabbage + celery plants.

 

 

Wed. July 11.

 

Pretty warm.  Split wood, pulled weeds, set celery plants + sprayed potatoes, + did a little on pig pen.

           

Mailed letters to Mary + Martin Cross, to come + mow to-morrow.

 

 

Thursday July 12-1906

 

Fair +hot, set out 45 cabbage plants, and started into pick cherries A.M but decided there wasn’t enough good ones to pay for picking + went home. P.M cultivated corn + melons for the women and raked the hay by the roadside. At Henry’s the evening and Clara gave me some strawberry cake to bring home.

 

 

Friday July 13

 

Hot again, split wood before B. hoed 1 row potatoes + part row onions in my garden. At 10 went after horse rake had to wait for it. Raked hay in barn lot. Ray and I put it in barn. 

 

Did chores. Had ice cream.

 

Frank had mare to cultivate corn by Farmers.

 

 

Saturday July 14

 

Went to station. 

 

In my garden, hoed potatoes, tomatoes, vines etc. and had a kind of finishing up all round. Finished at 1:20 PM, ate dinner and went to station: arrived about 4 PM + Chet came ashore.

 

 

Sunday July 15

 

At station.

 

 

Monday July 16

 

Came ashore and got home at 7 A.M thinned out vines. 44 hills made Bordeaux mixture, split wood, moved pig pen.

 

Sam Raytee in fooling with the nearest R.R. gate lost hold of Porter’s horse (family) and it ran on to the crossing just in season it meet Ex. train, the horse was killed instantly.

 

 

Tues. July 17

 

Hot, muggy+ light showers. Went to Colchester after sprayer.  Dinner at Mr. Carey’s. Nice beans, nice bread and everything nice all well enjoying the visit very much.

 

Weasel killed 10 chickens last night. Went after Richard Cross to mow for us. Farmer says he has sold out.

 

 

Wed. July 18

 

Hot as hell.  Good hay day.  Biggest days work yet.

 

Split wood until breakfast.  Cultivated strawberry corn patch; twice each row.  Richard Cross came at 8.30 to mow.  Set him to mowing.  Cultivated most of corn near house.

 

Went to King’s to see about Horse-rake.  Went again and got it and third time to take it home after raking a good load of hay.  Then Ray and Chestie and I got the hay in.

 

Cow got into meal bbl. But guess she didn’t eat enough to hurt herself.  As we didn’t get through haying until 7 Frank had milked for me and I was glad.

 

 

Thu. July 19

 

Hot again and dry.  Very dry and we need rain badly.

 

Split wood, pulled weeds round shed.  Bordeaux Mixture and P. Green on all potatoes and part of vines and tomatoes.

 

Made trough for pig, unloaded hay alone, got wagon ready for supper and told stories to Chestie.

 

Frank. G. thinks he has a bargain in hay and wants Chet to buy part of it with him.

 

 

Fri. July 20

 

Not quite so hot.  Cloudy and muggy all day.  Rain PM.

 

Folks expected to go to city to get pictures taken but clouds scared them out of it.

 

Hoed strawberry corn patch AM, finished 12.30 PM.

 

Went to Station, got wet.  Coming back to W. Pt. got wet again.  Late home and doing chores.  Had to tell stories to Chestie after supper.

 

 

Sat. July 21

 

Rain all AM by spells.  Cleaned out barn, partly.

 

Got note from Henry saying he wanted my wood moved.  So after dinner I came home and with Henry Bessett’s help cleaned out the bay.  Henry came over a little while.

 

Took supper with Aunt Em.

 

Took good bath before supper and changed my clothes.

 

 

Sun. July 22

 

Swept up + had a regulation. Henry Thayer came over at 9 A.M. and we went over to Chet’s + looked things over and then went to Station. Took dinner with Chet and then they came ashore leaving me alone.

 

I fried doughnut + Watkins combination came just as I commenced to fry. Ed did the honors + I fried doughnut. Later,  on Stone’s combination, a party of eight came in on me, tested doughnuts, sang a few plantation melodies, played guitar + had a great old time.

 

Then I washed a shirt and overalls, got supper + went to bed at 10 P.M.

 

 

Mon July 23    Came ashore

 

Chet came about 10 to station, and I came ashore reaching Chet’s at noon.

 

This P.M. pulled wormwood + split + piled wood. Hard wind blowing when I left station making rowing very hard for me and that with pulling wormwood makes my back pretty lame tonight.

 

At Henry’s this evening for turnip plants + he gave me a lot of arrowheads for Chet. Aunt Em gave me some watermelons + Clara a piece of lemon pie.

           

 

Tus July 24

 

Cool + clear. Set out turnip plants: cultivated my garden + patch for strawberries. Hoed tomatoes, pulled weeds and P. Greened my potatoes.

 

Mailed card to J. E. Cashman, relation to boat found Sunday.

 

 

Wed July 25

 

Cool morning hot day, split wood, went to station. Chet well. Duck on lake shore good shot. Two dogs. Dinner at King’s coming home, green peas, fine.

 

Hoed all potatoes in my garden P.M. Another frog pumped out of the well.

 

 

Thu, July 26. – 1906

 

Cool mng, hot day, Split + piled quite a lot of wood.

 

Hoed and weeded one row of peas, finished sweet corn + other work in my garden. Ray, Chestie + I went over to the shop + ground the scythes. Found cows right fore leg badly swelled at and above knee: put on hot water + black liniment. After supper told stories for Chestie and he went to sleep.

 

 

Fri. July 27.

 

Very hot day, Folks + Mrs. Gilmore went to city + had boys picture taken. Split + piled wood, hoed peas and did various other things that amounted to nothing. Cows leg swollen more this mng but not so hard to-night, bathed it four times to-day. Kept her in barn + fed her ­­­fodder corn + hay.

 

So hot for the calf I put her in the barn also.

 

Coming home to-night met Peter + Henry. First time I have seen either of them for three weeks.

 

 

Sat July 28.

 

Hot again. Light shower P.M.

 

Hoed out my row of onions. Finished splitting + piling the wood we cut last winter. Paris green on Chet’s potatoes, only a very few.

 

Bathed cows leg twice: very much better.

 

Locked wire screen on frame + hung screen door. I came home via Raytee’s + Cole’s. Henry has a new wheel. Hope he will come + see me to-morrow.

 

 

Sun. July 29

 

Hot. Showers toward evening,

 

At home nearly all day. Henry didn’t come.

 

Ray picked berries, A M. About noon they went up street + returned about 6 P.M. Dinner at Aunt Em’s. Fred Farmer having bilious attack, taken yesterday.

 

 

Mon, July 30.              Went to Station

 

Rainy. Cleaned out barns + prepared place for compost heap in AM.

 

Went to Station P.M.

 

 

Tue.  July 31      Came from Station

 

Cloudy mng.  Clearing at 8 AM.  Came from Station AM.

 

Got home at 10.  Went to mowing oats, cut about a third of them and went to raking.  Frank Gilmore mowed some in PM while I raked until 6 PM.

 

Hope to finish oats tomorrow.

 

Lloyd sick PM and evening.  Am awful tired tonight.  Had a hard day’s work.  Will be harder tomorrow I guess.
