August 1906

Wed. August 1

Hot hazy day.  Finished mowing oats.  Got in 2 loads.  Frank helped PM.  Oats seem to be in good condition.

Ruth gave me pint of canned B. Raspberries.

Lloyd is much better today.  Letter to J. E. Cashman. (Boat)

Thu. Aug. 2

Hot hazy day, but looking doubtful for another tomorrow.

Finished getting in the last third of the oats.  Turned and raked all alone, but Ray helped get them in.

Lloyd off the hooks again, teething, feverish.

Chestie a little under the weather also.

Frank didn’t show up.  Very tired and lame; seemed as if I never could get through my days work.

Fri. Aug. 3

Hot hazy day again but looking more threatening than yesterday.

Mowed and spread the oat and pea patch and did not rake it up so it still lies flat.  Pitched off last load of oats; they fill the scaffold pretty full.  Folks fear feeding green corn to cow, is cause of Lloyd’s sick spell.

Bordeaux mixture on my potatoes, tomatoes, vines and on most of Chet’s potatoes.  Letter from J. E. Cashman. (Boat)

He will write again.

Sat, Aug 4   Went to Station

Rainy mng, did chores.  Went to Station.  Pretty windy, almost decided at the Pt. not to go.  Arrived at Station at noon and Chet came ashore.  At Station I washed 2 shirts, frock and overalls and took a good bath and got supper. During the P.M. Percy, Mimi, Oral and a couple of lady friends and one gent called on me and we had a pleasant visit. Rescued Cashman’s boat again.

Sunday Aug 5. At Station  Came ashore

Foggy morning, hot day but moderate breeze. Lots of fun at the Point and Island. Last evening was fine, full moon, water calm, and everybody’s out singing and having a good old time. On my way over, found the boat I pulled ashore two weeks ago, floating loose again near the neck, so hitched the horse and drew it several rods ashore. Made doughnuts, but they were pretty doughy.

3.00 P.M. and Chet came at 2:20 and I left at 3. With sail on boat reached West Point safely and missed keys, had to run back after them and made me late home, but raked oats and peas and got them in after supper. Told stories to Chestie.

10:00 P.M. at home. Louis King mad, at story that he was drunk and stayed two nights at Farmer’s. Good North West breeze sprung up just as I got here and a big thundershower is in progress to northward. Breeze cool and refreshing.

Mon. Aug 6.

Rainy by spells, with thunder and lighting. McRae’s house struck but no one injured.  Cleaned up back of barn and around wood yard and sheds. Mr. Barrows stopped for shelter from thundershower. Showed him all around and Chestie showed pictures to entertain him. Got home a little earlier this eve and went over to see Aunt Em and the rest.
