Stone Carving in Soapstone for Beginners & Intermediates

Here is a chance to learn to carve a beautiful sculpture of your own design or continue developing your sculpting skills with professional advice.  Working in soapstone, participants will be busy the first evening learning hands on how to use a variety of sculpting tools.  Tools to use during class and a 35-40 lb. piece of stone to keep are included in this inspiring Access class. Kathy and Robert, an award-winning stone sculptor, will lead you to discover the art within the block. This offering for adults is designed for those interested in beginning drawing techniques.  Using graphite, you will explore with helpful exercises to aid in the understanding of fundamental drawing. Join Ginny for this special one day en plein air (in the fresh air) painting workshop right here at CVUHS.  Rain or shine, Ginny will have students focused on outdoor foliage painting.  This is an exciting opportunity for Access students to learn during the height of foliage season.  Participants must have their own supplies and bring  appropriate outdoor clothing. A bag lunch will be a good idea, as the painting will not slow down over the 5 hours.   For really bad weather, participants will paint from 2nd story windows.

Designed for beginners through skilled amateurs, Sarah can help you learn quickly.  For beginners, this will be your introduction to black and white film developing and darkroom printing.  For the more advanced student, Sarah, an Alfred University graduate in the arts -photography major, will encourage you to improve your skills in, and understanding of composition, lighting, and darkroom techniques.  With her wealth of experience and knowledge in the field, there will be plenty of time to discuss your individual challenges as you learn.  This is a hands-on, small lab learning experience.  Develop your own film and prints.  Bring your own film camera to learn how to use it most effectively.  Extra darkroom lab time from 5:30-8:30 p.m. on Tuesday evenings

For those photographers who already know the basics of developing and printing, this is your chance to use the CVU darkroom at your own pace. Bring in your developed film and work on one of our 7 enlargers.  Price includes use of all chemicals and equipment. Participants need to bring their own paper.  Staff person will be on hand to answer questions and explain the CVU setup, but there will be no formal instruction. This is a great opportunity for anyone with printing knowledge, but no equipment.  27+ hours of darkroom use for $85  Limit: 7

Join Michael, a local artisan, in creating your own heirloom within 2 weeks.  Build your own full-size rustic adult chair made of birch and alder.  Michael goes out in the woods to gather all the materials and hardware included for assembling a chair to take home at the completion of this 2-week course. Participants should bring a reliable drill and several drill bits, hammer and measuring tape. Some tools will be available for loan. Calligraphy for Beginners

A nuts and bolts introduction to beautiful handwriting! The course will begin with examination of letter shapes and proportions using pencils and markers and will proceed to the exploration of letterforms for the Italic style of writing (both lower and upper cases) using the broad edge nib and ink. Join Lydia, a CVU educator, in learning about layout, use of color, and paper choices, as everyone will complete basic lettering projects.  Once you gain the power of the pen, you can use this skill for a lifetime.  More styles will be covered if time allows.  Quality pens and all materials and handouts are included in the price.

Woodworking for Beginners-You Build It!!

Students will learn the basics of woodworking through the construction of a small project. Brett, a certified design and technology educator, will lead participants through design, tool use and then the construction of a small multi-use shelf unit, or bird feeder.  Over the 27 hours of shop time, everyone will utilize many of the hand and power tools in the CVU shop. This class is designed for total beginners as well as those that would like to learn how to do it right.  Shop for your materials after the first week.

Designed as an open lab, participants need to bring in a project they want to work on. Brett, a certified design and technology educator, will be your advisor as you work on starting or completing a project.  Students should have a basic familiarity with a table saw, planer and joiner and/or lathe. Review of specifics of CVU tools will be presented. Expert advice will be available in order for you to accomplish your goals. Take advantage of 27 hours of shop time with well oiled and sharp machines.  Designed for novice through advanced woodworkers.   Students are responsible for bringing in their own materials over the duration of the course.

Home Repair Done Right

Have you always wanted to fix your own leaky faucet, clean out a trap, fix a hole in the sheet rock, hang pictures with mollies, wire a lamp, change a fixture, set tile, and more, all without using duct tape?  Brett, a certified design and technology educator, will introduce people to the tools needed, demonstrate the best approach to doing the simple repairs for yourself, and then participants will practice the skills hands-on in class before taking on the home repair.  Power drill, circular saw, jig saw, mitre saw and palm sander use, along with essential hand tools for all households, will be covered, as well as a discussion of which jobs to take on first.  Bring your enthusiasm, specific questions, even digital photos of those small jobs you want to tackle yourself.

Take a walk down the ancient path of the silk road where the weary traveler takes a break at the local tea house, sips on green tea and nibbles on little morsels that warm the belly.  We will explore the traditional technique in preparing three courses that will indulge both your palette and your sense of adventure.  It is easier than you think!  The evening workshop focuses on authentic ingredients available in Vermont, gives some simple techniques to make food look like art, and guides in the preparation and eating (of course) of three dim sum courses:  Shrimp Sui Mai, Three Mushroom Dumpling, and Wonton Soup.

Exploring OOLONG  TEA from China and Taiwan

Come celebrate some of the most prized semi-fermented oolong teas from the birthplace of tea.  Participants will be treated to the varied tastes and rich color and flavor of at least 7 of the Oolong Teas.  Expand your tea drinking experience with new understanding of the process involved, the regions the teas come from, and the history behind the world's great teas, all enhanced by photos taken by the Dobra Tea devotees while traveling to the regions the teas grow.  Oolong teas gathered in the high mountains is often infused many times with hot water because of its rich and fragrant character.  The Dobra Tea presenters always bring good taste and new learning to Access.

The kids will learn Chinese greetings, words for colors, numbers, body parts, names of fruits, animals, toys and more through various activities - lively songs, playful games and so on. This class will bring fun and excitement to language learning for young kids (parents are welcome to participate).

Here is the opportunity to have your child begin to learn, through mostly oral activities, one of the oldest languages.     Join native Mandarin teacher Xue Li, and watch your child begin to learn and speak conversational Chinese. In a pleasant and active learning atmosphere, children will learn useful phrases and sentences for everyday situations such as greetings, introducing friends, shopping, asking the time and directions, numbers, family, colors, names of fruits, animals and outfits.  They will also learn about Chinese culture including the Great Wall, Chinese New Year, Chinese tea, painting and calligraphy, etc.  As we do with all Access classes, if we have a big response to this new offering, we will find a way to continue the opportunity as long as there is community interest.  All materials included.

Music Seeds - Newborn through 2 Year Olds

Join Carolyn, an experienced early childhood music educator, and bring the joy of music to your child and home.  Children and their parents will participate in activities that incorporate songs, chants, movement, and musical patterns. We’ll use a variety of fun props including shakers, beanbags, scarves, and a parachute. This is an informal, playful music learning experience for parents to share with their children.  Carolyn, in addition to teaching Music Seeds, is a piano teacher, organist, life long music maker, and has raised three very musical children.   Instructor: Carolyn Wood Fee: $65     Limit: 12

Video Film Making for Students  ages 12-18

Join two CVU students in this new Access course.  Diana and Jordan will cover the basics of camera, sound and the blending of the two in the editing lab here at CVUHS.  Participants will learn just what it takes to make a film on your own.  The group will end up making a short film, learning from doing.  Diana and Jordan each have amateur experience making films, and look forward to sharing their skills with others.
