College Fair Tips
Before the Fair – Get Prepared
Ø Consider these questions for yourself:
Do you plan to attend college or technical school?
What do you need/want in a college education?
What criteria might you use in selecting a college- Size? Location?
Ø Review list of college reps in attendance. Circle any colleges you might consider.
Ø Research - Stop into the Guidance Office to see if we have their college catalogues in our collection. Browse through it to pick up some ideas for questions you might like to ask.
-Ask your teachers/parents/coaches etc. where they went.
Ø Prepare a list of questions
At the Fair – Be
efficient
q Pick up your map & head straight to the reps. on your list.
q Be bold! Reps love students who are friendly & welcoming, take the initiative to ask questions, and accept information about the college.
q Use the college fair worksheet to record the information you receive.
q Bring a plastic shopping bag for materials you collect.
Questions for you to
consider asking the college rep.:
Admissions: What is the average profile of admitted students? Grades? SATs? Extra-curricular
activities? Which criteria do you count most heavily?
Course of study: What are your strongest majors? Your
most popular programs? Approx. how many hours a day do students study? How is
the academic calendar set up?
Athletics: To which NCAA Division does your school belong? What
are the most popular sports? Is there strong student attendance at games/meets/etc.? What percentage of the students are
athletically involved? Are there athletic facilities for general student use?
Social Life: What are your most active clubs? Are there
fraternities/sororities? Do most people stay on campus on the weekends? What is
there to do?
Living: What type of housing is available? Are there
substance free dorms? Do 1st year students have cars? How safe is
the campus?
